Antony Price, Renowned for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the soft-colored suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."
This news arrives less than a month after he unveiled his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Lasting Legacy
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in menswear at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by outfits on model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in designing sculptural silhouettes established him as a "true original," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.
During the nineties, he started creating pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
