RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The location, located using intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of entry passages down to the site... early reports suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their bravery," he commented. "They were among thousands of British troops deployed over the festive period. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an ambush killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
