Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, after the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, he revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
