Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Fighters Party

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of personalities, and a thrilling plot showcasing celestial beings, evil spirits, and sinister influences growing in strength within the city.

Heads-up: Spoilers for the third episode of the new season are included.

The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced

The latest chapter ended with a dramatic pause and presented the initial group of characters who will split off from the central cast to begin their independent quest, separate from the additional parties.

The Soldiers table features the determined fighter (brought to life by Travis Willingham), Thimble (Laura), the strong-willed figure (Whitney), Wicander (Sam), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie).

Dividing the Cast

With an extensive roster, it was obvious from the start that having everyone at one table would be impossible.

This explains, the first four episodes of Campaign 4 serve as an Prelude, intertwining the personal journeys before branching into three smaller tables: Warriors, Planners, and Explorers.

Characteristics of the Warrior Group

Per the Dungeon Master, the combat-focused party is for participants who prefer a classically intense battle-oriented narrative style where diplomatic options are scarce.

At first glance, figures such as the squeamish cleric the cleric might appear mismatched, but the events of the latest installment make it clear why these five characters are ideally matched for the Soldiers table.

Motivations for Departure

First, the team knows exactly where to proceed after a brutal first encounter with the enemy group.

Casimir of Thjazi—whose passing initiated the campaign’s events—used the enemy for his selfish purposes, invading Thjazi’s hideout, attacking the character, and swiping all the magical artifacts to auction.

The antagonist then cleared his debts and escaped to a fortified location in Gormalay, Timmony, beyond the urban center, with Cyd close behind.

Character Drivers

Moreover, each adventurer has a specific drive to leave the city the urban setting:

  • The agile hero, as Thjazi’s partner and closest confidant, desires revenge.
  • The knowledgeable figure knows the northern area and advises that it is a dangerous location.
  • Tyranny and The cleric, having defied his family’s wishes to eliminate the fighter and instead freed him, have no safe haven.
  • Yet, their reputation as key figures in the influential clan could help the group reach locations they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Additionally, The grateful character vowed a life debt to The cleric for his rescue and will now accompany him everywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

In addition, all of them are wanted by the rulers that control Dol-Makjar for a multiple motives, making staying in the city dangerous:

  • The agile adventurer and The character are notorious outlaws.
  • The warrior and The cleric betrayed the powerful family and the horde of evil beings they are partnered with.
  • Teor is targeted for elimination by House Halovar.

This means them little choice but to journey toward Timmony in quest for the antagonist.

What’s Next?

According to the recent installment’s follow-up content, we learn that the Soldiers table will not appear in the upcoming installment, leaving the other eight cast members to assemble the Explorers and Planners tables.
