Eurovision Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – But It Has Evolved Into a Calculated Tool to Sanitize Conflict.

An new term came to light several months after the start of the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it signifies “Child casualty without any family left”. This term is specific to Gaza, according to health professionals like child health specialists. Normally, it is rare for physicians to care for a child who has been bereaved of their complete family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” about the genocide in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been wiped out and the number of child amputees surpasses that of any other region in the world. Nothing ordinary about numerous doctors returning from a sea of ruins with accounts of children being intentionally shot at.

A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

The Gaza Strip continues to be hell on earth. Critical healthcare resources are failing to reach those in need, and groups like Amnesty International assert that violations are still being committed. Officials has denied these claims, consistent with how it denies all charges it is charged with. Meanwhile, while grieving children who lost parents are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its declared purpose of “unity and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, although at least four European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Since this, we are told, is what unity manifests as.

The contest, notably banned Russia from taking part in 2022 over the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza appears to be entirely distinct.

A Selective Vision

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for questionable voting tactics last year in what appears to have been an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that settler violence and forced displacement in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that foreign reporters are still prevented from independent reporting in Gaza. None of this, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Profound Human Cost

Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – nearly twice the projected longevity of a person in Gaza now. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it historically embodied. An institution that was originally built on harmony has transformed into a blatant mechanism to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
