Larian Studios Clarifies Its Implementation of AI Tools for New Project
The developer behind acclaimed RPGs like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin has recently unveiled its new project, sparking immense excitement within the gaming community. However, recent comments from the company's lead designer have added a new dimension to the discussion, touching on the developer's approach toward machine learning.
A Tool for Ideation, Not Replacement
In a latest message, Swen Vincke detailed that the developer is utilizing generative AI for particular supporting purposes. These encompass enhancing PowerPoint slides, creating early-stage visual ideas, and drafting draft text.
Crucially, Vincke stressed that the end material in the game will be created solely by actual writers. "We are writing all the content manually," he affirmed.
Larian is continuously increasing our roster of concept artists and are busily assembling writing teams.
As concept art is being explicitly referenced — we presently have over twenty artistic staff and have roles to fill for additional talent.
Everything we do is incremental and designed to enabling creatives to spend greater focus on making content.
Every machine learning application implemented properly is additive to a creative team workflow, never a stand-in for their talent.
Responding to Feedback and Defining the Path
The news of employing this technology initially provoked backlash among portions of the player base. In reaction, Vincke offered additional elaboration on social media.
"Our team utilizes machine learning to gather inspiration, similar to we use the internet and art books," he explained. "In the very early brainstorming phase we use it as a simple sketch for layout which we then replace with original illustrations."
He added, "We've hired talent for their creative vision, not for their capacity to execute what a algorithm proposes."
Three Pillars of Practical Application
Vincke had earlier detailed the studio's focused strategy to this technology, defining its use into key areas:
- Handling Monotonous Jobs: Areas like polishing mocap data, audio processing, and technical processes like adjusting assets for various species.
- Fast-Tracked Experimentation: Using tools to speedily create basic mock-ups of gameplay ideas to test concepts before complete production.
- Long-Term Aspirations: Investigating how machine learning could in the future facilitate emergent reactivity, particularly in creating player-driven narratives in a complex RPG.
He explicitly affirmed that key artistic disciplines — including writing — are are absolutely not departments where the company is replacing human talent. In fact, Larian is recruiting more in these exact fields.
"Larian is neither releasing a game with any AI components, and we are certainly not planning on reducing teams to substitute them with AI," Vincke summarized.
