The boxing world is in a notable downturn this season, with a scarcity of big events and considerably fewer thrilling fights than typical. The prospect of a serious and intriguing heavyweight contest between Parker and Wardley at the O₂ Arena provides some solace to the beleaguered business. Wardley, previously a white-collar fighter, who only started boxing when he was twenty, had zero amateur background and has perpetually battled skepticism over his skill set. But he is equally near to a world title challenge.

“This is the most significant fight, at the moment, in the heavyweight class. These two boxers have stepped up when neither one was required to take this bout. Joe Parker is the interim WBO titleholder and they have formally instructed the champion to fight him, but he was hurt. Parker wants to fight anyway.

“Fabio is also in a fantastic position and he could have just waited for his opportunity. He said ‘No, thanks.’ He wanted to fight – and against Parker because it offers him an opportunity to jump the queue.”

Parker, set to be 34 in January, said: “It's win or go home. I am not focused on a loss. I honor my adversary and what he has done and his preparation for this contest. But I am on a superior tier and I am going to show it on the day of the bout.”

Wardley will be 31 in December, and he said: “This is a monumental event for the pair of us. It is obviously the biggest fight of my professional life and the greatest challenge I've faced. But whenever I face a tougher opponent I elevate my performance. The upcoming fight will be the same. The gap between Parker's level and where people think I am has been a recurring narrative in my boxing life.

“He has been going around the block for a extended duration, with a many bouts on his ledger. In no way is he an old man but he has been in the boxing world for a significant time and had some heavy fights. I too have faced intense battles and I know they put miles on the clock. He has been in a far greater number of those compared to me.”
