The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller Merging Silent Hill with Social Deduction Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a young woman harboring several human souls inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Inside her exist four distinct souls, all possessing their own anxieties and motivations. These entities can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a creepy hospital, though other scenes show the protagonist exploring a desolate chapel.
A World of Personal Dread
"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to others can activate something primal inside us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The central mechanic involves controlling the persona that surfaces at a particular time. However, these souls will switch against your will as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become exaggerated and attack the protagonist one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the waiting room have enormous blooms growing from their heads are. Flowers are a recurring element, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four personas claims that the physical form belongs to them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
Once players believes a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. However, because every entity can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The last one remaining might be a fake. In any case, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
