The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Selected the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song

This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure by Critical Role, revealed a new opening credits. It features the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.

All in all, the intro appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the music selection.

This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the official score of that title, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental option, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will love its presence.

But for me, The series' intro fails to capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.

Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. This track that excites you before you start an installment of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, the creators has already said that the animated show will have a few changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening seems to be among these.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of the second series, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and the video site.
