Vince Gilligan Reveals He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... For Now.

The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that Pluribus would emerge as a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

Now that Season 1 of the hit series wrapping up—and the next chapter already in development—the creative team reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.

Regarding the Tremendous Viewer Reception

Anyone might to get swayed by the constant speculation and online debates surrounding Pluribus. He is striving to ignore the noise.

“It feels like an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Never in my life searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“We don't try to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by online forums.”

“Better to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.

The Big Question: Will the showrunner See the Finale of Pluribus?

Considering the writers are not listening by public opinion, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… sort of.

“We've developed some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to discard a decent plan for a superior concept. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

Then again, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.

“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”

Of course, one could always use the iconic TV endings?

“My dream is Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV.
