Zohran Mamdani affirms his intention to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion
NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue during his run for office.
An Iconic Home
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for most New York City mayors since the post-war period.
But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key platform, did not confirm this decision immediately after his victory in November.
"The choice came down to the security of my family and the importance of directing my complete efforts on implementing the affordability agenda New Yorkers supported," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.
Leaving Astoria
He resided in Astoria, Queens, a district known for its diverse immigrant populations and international dining.
"To Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," he noted.
"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, it will forever remain inside me and the work I do," he said.
Campaign Controversy
Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani tied his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.
But his rivals, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he hails from a well-known family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which concluded in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a space for official events, and championed a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.
A Grand New Home
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience surroundings a stark contrast to his previous Astoria apartment.
Featuring cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.
Within, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's original era.
The compound, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also has fortified protections to secure the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
His former home is rent stabilised, a policy where the city sets limits on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.
City residents view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the housing expenses outpaces what many can afford.
Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
